3 Reasons Why You Should Try Dogsledding in the Italian Alps

When you think of winter activities in the Italian Alps, you’re most likely thinking of skiing or snowboarding – but have you ever tried dog sledding before? Dog sledding, or ‘dog mushing’ is a super enjoyable and adventurous way to enjoy the picturesque landscapes of the mountains. So what does it involve? As the name says, you get to learn how to control a pack of dogs to manoeuvre your sledge – but it’s not as easy as it looks. If you visit a dog sledding school just like the Scuola Italiana Sleddog, just a short drive from Albergo Miramonti, you can book some lessons to learn how to mush the 'right way'!

AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

Dog sledding is definitely a unique experience to have in the Alps! A method of transportation that first originated from the Inuit people of Northern America, the practice has since travelled across waters to Europe, where people have adopted this efficient form of transportation to trudge through the cold terrain. I mean, how often do you get the chance to drive a team of huskies on a mountain? The dogs are professionally trained as well as being well-taken care of. At first, learning the ropes may be intimidating, but once you get the hang of it – you will enjoy the ride!

EXPLORE THE WINTER LANDSCAPE

There’s nothing more breathtaking than sledding through the dynamic landscape of the Italian Alps – you will see forests of snow-covered evergreens, as well as heaps of glittering snow spread all-across the area. There’s nothing quite like it! On top of that, while dog sledding, you will immediately be immersed in your surroundings, providing a unique perspective. Keep in mind though, the dogs do get overly excited, so expect a speedy ride through the forest and into the plateau.

AND LASTLY, THE DOGS!

Now, what you’re probably most looking forward to – the huskies! Traditionally, in dog sledding, the primary breed that’s used for this activity are huskies, particularly Alaskan and Siberian varieties. As you dogsled, you will understand the important relationship between humans and animals (as well as nature). Essentially, the human and the huskies need to work as a team in order to get the sledge moving smoothly. Some common phrases that are used when mushing is “Go!” or “Slow down!” (Interchangeable in different languages). When the huskies are resting, they or nothing but irresistibly cute creatures! But once the owner signals ‘ready’, the huskies quickly change gear, and begin barking and growling as if they’re asking the owner to “pick me!” You don’t have to worry too much about the dogs, as huskies are born to pull sledges, which is all made evident about how excited they appear to run across the powdery snow.
