5 Christmas Markets in Northern Italy You Need to Try

 

Who doesn’t love a trip down to the Christmas markets during the festive season? The streets are lit up with twinkling lights, the hustle and bustle of the craftsman selling their goods and the magical atmosphere that fills the air - there’s nothing quite like it! There are plenty of places for you to visit that’ll get you in the Christmas spirit during your trip to Albergo Miramonti. Here are some of our favourites:

Duomo di Milano 

Each of the districts in Milan holds their own Christmas markets. The Piazzo Duomo Christmas Market wears the crown of being the largest and most famous in the fashion capital. The picturesque square is filled with craftsmen in their chalet-huts selling their goods to passers-by. You’ll find anything from Christmas tree baubles, Nativity cribs and stockings, to a variety of food delicacies from different cultures. The highlight of the festivities has to go to the spectacular opening ceremony, whereby the Milanese Christmas tree is lit up to mark the beginning of the festivities.

Trento

Trento is a beautiful alpine town nestled between the Adige River Valley and the snow-capped mountains of Brenta Dolomites. During Christmas-time this place becomes even more charming than it already is – with the warm lights, wooden houses and dreamlike atmosphere spreading the Christmas spirit. The market is laid-out across two squares: Piazza Fiera being the main attraction and the Piazza Cesare Battisti, which provides more of a peaceful feel. It hosts a mix of local artistry and delicacies, which have lead it to earn the name of the ‘Christmas Town’. You can even take a trip to visit Santa whilst you’re there – giving the children an unforgettable experience. Verona

We’re sure you recognise the town, Verona, for it was the home to Romeo and Juliet in the Shakespearean tragedy. The romantic setting combined with the festive spirit transforms the town into what almost feels like a fairy-tale land. You’ll feel fully immersed in the Christmas Veronese traditions as the streets are lit-up and decorated throughout the whole town. In Piazza Dei Signori, you’ll find the Nuremberg Christmas Market, which embodies the German-style. This market has become extremely famous and there’s no questioning as to why!

Bolzano

The Bolzano Christmas Market opened its doors for the 29th time this year! It’s house-shaped stalls house, 80 exhibitors, showcasing their local businesses and their hand-crafted items. You’ll find anything from decorations, accessories and candles to Christmas cakes and confectionary. Catch a glimpse of the craftsmanship that goes into these products inside the Piazza Walther, whereby you can watch the magic that the artisans put into their masterpieces. This combined with the local gastronomy and plenty of kids’ entertainment, make it the ideal destination for families.

Merano 

The Merano Christmas Market is located along the valley of the River Passirio and is one of the most visited Christmas markets in the whole of South Tyrol! There are dozens of wooden houses marked by craftsmen – creating unique objects made of iron, glass, wood or wax. You’ll also be able to explore the South Tyrolean cuisine, as there is an abundance of food stalls for you to try. Christmas-filled activities take place throughout the festive season, you can chuck on your ice skates and take to the ice rink in the Piazza Terme, or attend the Christmas concerts. There are endless amounts of things for you to do!
